The Art Assignment: 3 - Indispensable GIF
So the first thing I thought of when I thought about this assignment, as I think many others have done (including Toyin herself), was think of kinda career/future motivations and what is indispensable me on that passionate intellectual level. I’m in my final year of my neuroscience and psychology degree and I’ve pretty much decided that research is what I wanna do in my future, so in that respect people are indispensable to me because without us being the complex beings, neurologically and psychologically, that we are, I wouldn’t be able to do that.
But then I thought about it a little more and people are indispensable to me in a lot of other ways too. I had a bad time settling in at university and for a long time I was really lonely, and suffered from depression. In my recovery, I’ve begun to realise that it’s other people, the few friends and family I’ve had here and back home, that have been the light in those dark times - bringing me out of myself and putting their arms around me and understanding - that has been indispensable to me too. And what really struck me was how amazing it is that we are all just clumps of cells and impulses all linked together in a human-shaped blob, but that those clumps of cells are put together in such a way that they have the capacity to understand and empathise with and love other clumps of cells and all their complexities.
So that’s what I hope I’ve managed to capture in my GIF. I don’t know how to sum it up in one or two words though. Humanity? People? Understanding cell-clumps? I dunno :P
I’m loving the Art Assignment so far! :)
